OLLI Summer Selections features several walking groups and field trip activities.

The community, including all present, past and future OLLI members, are invited to register for summer activities and classes at UD’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), June 17-July 27, in-person and online.

OLLI “Summer Selections” offerings take place in Dover, Lewes, Ocean View, Wilmington and online, covering topics from nature and culture to history, cooking and exercise.

Past OLLI participation is not required, and the usual 50-plus age guideline is waived for adults of any age to participate in OLLI summer classes.

This summer, participants can register for a single week for $30, or unlimited access for the full five-week session for $125. Partial scholarships are available.

“Whether in person or online, Summer Selections courses are a great way to discover why UD’s OLLI program is where friends meet to learn,” said UD OLLI director Karen Asenavage Loptes. “Our new flexible summer schedule and pricing were implemented with seasonal visitors in mind, or anyone with summer vacation plans or schedules, who would still like to join us at OLLI for some fun activities, learning about new topics and meeting new friends.”

Examples of Summer Selections courses and activities include:

  • Field trips — Biggs Museum of American Art, Dickinson Plantation, Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Air Mobility Command Museum, Historic New Castle
  • Kent County classes — Coastal Change and Horseshoe Crabs, History of Gospel Music, Culinary Conversation with Chef Alex Neaton of Longwood Gardens
  • New Castle County classes — Birding 101, Understanding Your Vital Signs, First Amendment and Bill of Rights, Chair Yoga, Book Groups, Wine Tasting
  • Sussex County classes — Monday at the Movies, Sussex County Volunteerism, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, History of Scotland, Retirement Tax-Planning, Seated Exercise for All
  • Online classes — Electric Vehicles: Pros/Cons/Myths, Family History: African Americans and Indigenous Americans, My Mother and the Holocaust, Elder Law and Planning, Writing Memoirs

UD’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute program, nicknamed “OLLI,” is a learning cooperative for adults 50 and over to take and teach classes together with no grades or exams. Summer classes provide an opportunity for new and returning participants to become acquainted with OLLI offerings in an abbreviated semester.

Delaware residence or prior OLLI membership is not required to register for OLLI Summer Selections. There is no cost for parking at UD OLLI locations, and free Zoom videoconferencing support is provided to OLLI online course participants. Some courses and activities may list an additional fee for supplies, or other class fee, noted in the course descriptions.
