Conservation in the Progressive Era, 1900-1920, was the origin of the environmentalism, which emerged in the 1950s. After World War II, 30 years of prosperity had side effects of pollution, oil spills, a nuclear meltdown and hazardous waste. Environmentalism found successes, but the Reagan years brought reversals.
